We are constantly in a big hurry, it seems. There’s nothing more annoying than these endlessly turning loaders, filing in the gap between two virtual spaces.

In physical space, we have no sign of waiting, but don’t we constantly wait for something? Don’t we wait to grow older when we are young? Later on, we wait to get into college, get a job, or find the right one to settle down with, then wait to have kids, and then wait for them to grow and so on. I am constantly waiting for the next big thing. It seems to me that waiting is the most permanent situation we find ourselves in.”

Maria Mavropoulou is a visual artist whose work and research focuses on the new realities created by the connectible devices we use to access the internet. Her practice highlights the meeting points between the physical and digital spaces that we inhabit, the contradictions and the friction that occur at the borders of those two worlds. Playing with the perception of viewers, she aspires to question the role and power of images in an era that is dominated by them.

Maria expresses these topics by using mainly the photographic medium, although her work expands to new forms of imagery such as VR and screen-captured images, GAN-generated images, animation, and video.
