In her new paintings and drawings Shanee Roe treats canvas and paper as a ruthless site for the explosion of bare bodies, human, and non-human alike. Roe explores and expressively depicts power relations ranging from intimate sexuality to intense compassion. In her work she captures and denotes modes of human fragility in mundane to amused scenery. The arresting outcome can be described as impulsive, grotesque and raw, while holding unknown secrets waiting to be unraveled by the viewer.
Roe’s paintings and drawings are bare and hence familiar; they are oddly exposed as they are tender. Roe's paintings and drawings allude freely to the history of last century paintings from Expressionism to The New Objectivity. Her candid imagery of current and everyday situations demands an endurance that is also embedded in the materiality of the medium of the painting itself. In vivid and poignant colors, Roe portrays intimate encounters pouring herself into a layered surface of distressing truths.
