Is it a copy? Fake? Appropriation? Conceptual Art? A performance?
WOMAN VS. MACHINE by Chinese artist and feminist Jiny Lan is an artistic commentary on the debate surrounding art and Artificial Intelligence. The artist challenges viewers to reconsider notions of creativity, authorship, and the value of human interpretation in the age of A.I.
During a 4-day performance, Jiny Lan appropriates the work PSEUDOMNESIA: THE ELECTRICIAN by German artist and photographer Boris Eldagsen. In April 2023, he declined the prestigious Sony World Photography Award because the jury had failed to notice that THE ELECTRICIAN was not a photograph, but an image co-created with AI. In an interview with CNN, he explained this historic moment: "It shows that at the moment the photographic world has been taken by surprise after this development that subtly you can create images that look like photography but you don't need to have the skills and expertise of photographers."
Jiny Lan has the skills and expertise of a painter. Trained at the National Academy of Fine Arts in Zhejiang, China, she has lived in Germany since 1995 and combines the artistic traditions of Asia and Europe to create her own visual language. By producing a hand-painted edition of 25 of one AI-generated image, the artist highlights the role of human interpretation and skill in art creation, even when the original source is AI-generated. Each edition Lan paints will be unique, contrasting with the potentially infinite reproducibility of digital AI art. This raises questions about the value of originality and the human touch in art. 
Boris Eldagsen called THE ELECTRICIAN the "Mona Lisa in the age of AI." While the Mona Lisa represents the pinnacle of human artistic skill, THE ELECTRICIAN represents the capabilities of A.I. and its impact on society. Lan's WOMAN VS. MACHINE blurs the lines between original and copy, human and machine creation, much like how digital reproductions have changed our relationship with classical works like the Mona Lisa.
It will take Jiny Lan about two months to finish the 25 editions; she needs about 2-3 days for one painting. The act of repeatedly painting the same image highlights the labor involved in traditional art-making, contrasting it with the presumed speed and ease of AI generation.

BIO David Pher is an abstract painter based in Berlin. "'The Secret to Success' is the title of my bodybuilder painting. Bodybuilding is a subject I have made fun of since I was a kid. I never understood why anyone would spend so much time lifting weights to compete with other people to see who had the nicest body. It always seemed so pointless to me. But at some stage, I saw it differently: what inspired me was their determination and perseverance shaping their body.  In order to keep their body in shape, they are repeating the same thing every day – lifting weights. What I find interesting in painting these muscular bodies is how our human mind sees those bodies and what we associate with them. Even the ancient Greeks had statues of their best athletes with very muscular bodies that represented success, fame and respect. When I saw bodybuilders as a kid, I had the impression: 'wow, those guys are so big and strong, they must be as strong as superheroes.' Besides that, my bodybuilder images have certain humor that I like to incorporate into my work. I still think bodybuilding is something pretty pointless – even boring. Oiled-up guys and girls compete to see who has nicer and bigger muscles. But since I have been using airbrush, I find it super fun and interesting to paint these shiny, oiled-up, muscular bodies. Determination, perseverance and hard work is the bodybuilder's 'secret to success'. One Step Further There Is a New Horizon

Matthew Stone has always wanted to make religious paintings, while also looking to disrupt the holy status of paint as the 'cosmic flesh' of art history. Erik Minter’s (b. 1979) work plays on bold, vibrant color combinations often met with sky-tone gradients that weave between graphical shapes and fluid-like splashes. Combining abstraction with surreal figuration, Minter has moved from digital drawings and photographic manipulations to paint and the physical surface, seeking to capture the emotion of experiences, either lived or dreamed and to express his feelings and curiosity about life. With different layers that unfold over time, each work gives way to new discoveries. When Minter bends the flow of color, his forms look as if they could not be controlled, however they have been. His technique, both premeditated and unplanned, channels him to find and explore pleasures, ironies and the mutable and plastic nature of existence. Experimenting with techniques as well as the strength and agility of his body, Minter continually pushes the limits of painterly expression. Through his experiments, he has developed a set of techniques that he now combines to create truly unique works of art that serve as both traces of processes and immutable results.

Isis Maria Niedecken is a Berlin-based artist. Since graduating from her Bachelor in Fashion Design, she has worked in various areas of the fashion and design industries. Living with a three-year-old and experiencing the world through his eyes is an important source of inspiration. His perception and associations play a major role in her work. Heavy Space

Christian Holze's edition title NOTHING NEW promises nothing new and stages the comeback of one of the major works of late Hellenistic sculpture in the form of a virtual reenactment: the Borghese Fencer (Louvre, Paris). While antique sculptures oftentimes lead a shadow existence in today’s art market, they are revived virtually.
Christian Holze bases his art on these objects and creates elaborate renderings of them. Like a sculptor, he models simulated space with various tools and methods, detached from physical properties. Ray tracing and Clothcollision are the new digital tools for working out reflections on surfaces and for controlling the fusion of fabrics and objects. The immaterial character paired with realistic light and gloss effects determine the visual appearance of these metamorphoses, of which one does not quite know whether they are already reality or still located in the realm of imagination. In addition to images with softly flowing draperies, Holze's work always shows the physiognomies of the two heroic sculptures merging into a liquefied, polymorphous mass in more than brotherly connotations of embrace. Holze translates the progression of the original forms into digital color surfaces without material structure into inkjet prints on canvas, which are finally glazed and partially painted over by hand with brush and paint. As printed originals, they thus assert their own inner contradiction. 
Christian Holze lives and works in Leipzig. In his work he combines different artistic categories into hybrids: object, 3D graphics, painting and installation. The exploration and dissolution of these categories is just as essential to him as the fusion of analog and digital working practices. The marketing strategies of current technology and luxury goods corporations are as much a part of Holzes artistic fundus as the identity-forming properties of their products. Through an affirmative approach to the resulting research topics, Holz's works slip into the role of the product themselves, questioning their own artistic creation and the commodification of visual art.

72-HOUR OPEN EDITION DROP | JINY LAN 26-29 JANUARY 2023 6-6 PM CET
The value of freedom is not present to many of us in everyday life. Freedom is taken for granted. For the Chinese artist Jiny Lan, who lived under different conditions in her homeland, freedom cannot be taken for granted. Her harmless-looking work of art, TONGJI INTELLIGENCE-YINE could lead to a prison sentence for her in China, as Pooh the bear, for example, has been banned.
The artist's proceeds will be used to prepare her performance for the planned exhibition, <a href="https://www.pinakothek-der-moderne.de/en/exhibitions/eccentric/">ECCENTRIC. THE AESTHETICS OF FREEDOM</a> at the Pinakothek der Moderne in autumn 2024.
The painting that forms the basis of this exclusive edition was created during a performance that Jiny Lan carried out in cooperation with 12 compatriots. At the 126th anniversary celebration of Tongji University, Jiny Lan invited 12 fellow celebrants to paint a picture with her. Each person was given a canvas that served as a palette for mixing colors. From the leftover paint on the canvases, Jiny Lan created figures in which she either hidden or demonstratively showed elements that were forbidden in China, like Pooh the Bear. The participants in the performance were thus included in the censorship system.

It is often said that curiosity killed the cat, yet an equally enduring notion suggests that cats possess nine lives. According to a theory put forth by ‘catisticians’ the inherent perils of a cat's curiosity led them to conclude that nine lives would be a far more efficient proposition than just one. This arrangement granted them the freedom they so ardently craved, along with ample time to luxuriate in snug corners, exude an air of bemusement, nap atop pristine piles of laundry, wear an air of apathy, explore the great outdoors, pounce on any moving object, cast disapproving glances, and even exhibit a curious fear of cucumbers. Once cats seemingly mastered the art of putting mortality on ‘paws’, they were liberated to approach life with the unique blend of gusto, agility, courage, and occasional recklessness that only cats can manifest. Stefan Heyer is a German contemporary artist working in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. His gestural abstract paintings are an exploration of histories, both personal and shared, and are inspired by pop culture, esoteric and philosophical issues of our postmodern digital age, alienation, nature, and history in general. His journey to a career in the arts was not born of privilege but of passion.
Experiencing the DIY attitude of the 1980s and 1990s, it was this aesthetic underground rather than academic training that developed Stefan Heyer’s style and consciousness of art. After a career in street fashion as an art and creative director, he went full-time as an artist in 2008.

"This painting was the key piece of my work on raw canvas from 2019–2021, a highly transformational period for my artistic practise and also personally: I moved from Hamburg to Spain. As a visualisation of an inner landscape fed by impressions and scents from past travels, the work is also a kind of cosmic mind map, a personal spiritual journey through the Pleroma, a boundless, impersonal space at the root ground of the human soul that encompasses its conscious and unconscious lives. According to Carl Gustav Jung, the soul is the intrapsychic definition of this fullness.

Joachim Bosse is a conceptual artist living and working in Berlin. Using hyperrealistic sculptures, typography, and mixed media, he deals with consumerism, the influences of mass media, and the impact of echo chambers and social eco-systems in the digital age. He remixes pop culture and recontextualizes famous iconography in order to question contemporary identities and cultural values. Bosse describes his work as public messaging.
ABOUT THE WORK "OMG, this was my first artwork ever. Until today, it felt like my firstborn, with whom I had a very close and special relationship.
I remember carrying around the idea for this sculpture for two years, not knowing how to bring it to life. Since it feels like a modern icon to me, representing today's society oscillating between the remains of analogue reality and searching for a new belief, purpose, and belonging in a realm of digital uncertainty, I was scared and nervous someone else would come up with the idea as well, being able to produce it before me.
When I finally was able to carve the face and body, to fully create and release it, I was blown away by the world-wide recognition as an artist and coverage by international media outlets such as Hypebeast and HIGHSNOBIETY, followed up by exhibitions and AR-experiences.

ABOUT THE WORK "I paint my pictures in my small 1-room apartment. I could also say studio or apartment; people in Berlin find that more chic, but I prefer to stick to what it is. Just like with my paintings. I paint what is. I paint who I am. I paint what I am. I paint myself. YES and MAYBE were created after a breakup in 2022, when weekends and evenings were long and nights were dark. Painting saved my (pardon my French) ass. Mateusz von Motz graduated from Juergen Teller's photography class in Nuremberg. He then finished his MA in sculpture at the Royal College of Art in London. While in London, he worked as a studio assistant at Juergen Teller Studio. As a young Polish artist, he has already established himself in the art world with a talent for brutal beauty. His practice often explores memories, space, and deconstruction themes and combines architectural and photographic elements. In his present practice, von Motz works across various mediums, including painting, sculpture, digital technology, and installation.
ABOUT THE WORK For his FUCK NORMAL I WANT MAGIC series, Mateusz von Motz combines text and images on mirrors. They have already become iconic.
This strategy refers, among other cultural backgrounds and phenomena, to the digital meme culture, which ties in with the popular genres and visual strategies of gaming, comics, and advertising. The artist mixes direct-address communication strategies with the mirror as a pictorial space, creating a multidimensional experience for the viewer. In this space, reality and virtuality blur together, and the subject is thrown back onto intimate, psychological levels of self-observation. Moments of introspection and transformation are presented in a multidimensional manner.
The artist incorporates Freudian (self) questioning and mythological narratives, such as that of Narcissus, to provide an ironic and empathetic commentary on an increasingly narcissistic society. This society is mirrored here in its collective numbing of the representations within social media. In this sense, von Motz ultimately confronts visitors with the choice of remaining in the dream world controlled by machines or being freed from the simulation. It is a social paradigm explored through everyday experiences and critical analysis.

Ed Broner is a self-taught French artist born in Paris. He began painting in the late 1980s and was a member of the Parisian graffiti subculture before relocating to Berlin to focus on painting.
Ed Broner uses photos and canvases as his personal diary. Especially in his paintings, he highlights the beauty of realness and authenticity while at the same time honoring the ideas and symbols of modern urban subcultures. In his style, he combines influences from graffiti and contemporary painting as well as from Aboriginal and African art, thus opening a dialogue between "Western" and "non-Western" cultures. In reflecting on and often subversively ironizing current aesthetics, Ed Broner asks about the nature of humanity in a postmodern world. He has published the photo book "Vagabondage" (Hatje Cantz) and has exhibited his work in solo and group shows internationally, such as at the Palais de Tokyo (2010) and Kunstforeningen Det Ny Kastet (2021).

Crocodiles Are Hunting

If you could only use one word to describe Vreni Frost, it would probably be: COLORFUL. The presenter, author, and speaker not only knows how to breathe life into words, she also brings paper and canvas to life. She made her debut as an artist in 2021 at the renowned HVW8 Art + Design Gallery (Berlin/Los Angeles) with her FACES series. This was followed in 2022 by, among other things, her first solo exhibition at Berlin Art Week, a charity auction at Christie's on the occasion of the Millerntor Gallery in Hamburg, and a collaboration with the chocolate manufacturer Sawade. Art and painting have accompanied Vreni since early childhood, especially body parts such as eyes, mouths, and hands, which constantly appear in her works. Even animals regularly find their place on the canvas.
ABOUT THE WORK CHAN(N)ELING MY INNER COCO is one of the first works from the CATSULE COLLECTION series. DEJLIG

The series SEARCHING STILL by Aaron Penne observes elusive and intangible sensations such as the feeling of a memory, a longing or a search. The artist strikes a balance between the machine and the human touch, creating fluid, painterly forms from hard-edge digital artifacts. Created on a Raspberry Pi using Python code, selected carefully by the artist from more than 800 outputs.
Penne draws parallels with early abstract artworks by Hilma af Klimt, whose compositions originated from a place of divination. In her work, the artist almost acted as a spiritual medium, opening herself to the influence of unseen forces and creating surprising compositions for their own sake.
This is not unlike the trust that generative artists put in their pseudorandom number generators. Artists creating abstract work using generative techniques gather their tools, open their minds, and let chance drive the composition. The visual language in SEARCHING STILL carries forward from abstract art, but there is also a conceptual lineage of intentionally opening oneself to infinite possibilities.

Jack Winthrop is an accomplished artist from Minneapolis, Minnesota (born July 26th, 1989) who recently moved to Los Angeles after living and working in New York City for a decade. When he was developing his style as a child, drawing and creating were like breathing. Almost involuntary. Winthrop’s curiosity drove him and his diligence to create new things on a daily basis.
 Winthrop mostly paints large-scale paintings on canvas. Manoeuvring between an eclectic range of styles and subjects, he challenges the conventional and explores the boundaries between fine art and subculture or street culture. By breaking down the human form, he creates work appealing like a mirror that transcends the filter we perceive as ourselves.
ABOUT THE WORK PEACE arose from the techniques Jack Winthrop learned from drawing, painting, and creating throughout his life by dissecting and dissolving them through abstraction. Winthrop deploys refined and sophisticated judgments through form, color, composition, balance, tension, and aesthetic, which he attributes to his education in the field of design. Peace is the translation and transformation of the artist’s engrossment towards the human condition, which he visualizes in his works.

I wanted to shape a mysterious, ineffable sense of falling through an abstract and blurred figurative environment, driven by emotionally overwhelming and profound memories, like an emotional story that everyone has experienced. INFO: For the SUMMER ARCHIVE SPECIAL, we make the remaining 11 APs available from the past 24-Hour Edition Drop with Paul Schrader: signed, numbered, and individualized by the artist in 2022.  The work TIME by Paul Schrader follows on from the large-scale works LIGHT and TOO MUCH CANDY from 2020 and is composed primarily of the colors yellow and red. The background consisting of spray paint is reminiscent of the graffiti of the early 90s. Like an infinito, the paint application on the right side is partially hidden by the background again, so the background suddenly comes to the foreground, especially at the edges of the color. The fine color nuances merge at closer look into delicate tones like poetry. Out of yellow and red a delicate orange tone emerges in hundreds of shades. The red and white blend into a berry hue. Through the interlocking of the individual colors create a rush like a melody in music.
"I love the sensual approach to art, the worlds of color and their composition on the canvas. Although the moment of movement has long since passed, the movement has an effect right into the now and yet is frozen on the canvas, in a time capsule. Fine nuances of color merge on closer inspection into delicate Tonë like poetry. From yellow and blue, for example, a delicate shade of green can emerge in hundreds of nuances. Red and blue can blend into an intense violet. These intermediate areas fascinate me. Through the interlocking of the individual colors and their composition on the canvas creates an intoxication like a melody in music.

Sie ist dafür bekannt, impulsiv zu malen, mit einem starken Gefühl für Fluss und ohne Zwang. Das Ergebnis ist eine erhabene, faszinierende Verwendung von Farbe und abstrakter Form, die ständig mit der Figuration interagiert. Anstatt sich nur auf Details zu konzentrieren, schafft sie eine minimalistische Darstellung dessen, was sie sieht, und versteht das Thema, ohne zu versuchen Formen über Farben zu korrigieren. Ihre Motive wie Essen, Tiere, Landschaften und Porträts sind zeitgenössisch, aber zeitlos.  ABOUT PLOTTER DRAWINGS Plotter drawings are line drawings. A mechanical drawing machine, the plotter, is controlled and driven by a computer program. The drawing pen clamped into the machine moves across the paper and draws, almost like a mechanical hand. Simply put, this hand responds to three commands: lift the pen, place the pen on the paper, and move the pen. When the move pen command meets the pen is down situation, a stroke is created.

Herbert W. Franke is a universal genius, you can say that with a clear conscience. For several decades he separated three lives: he was the caver and scientist, the artist and curator, the art theorist and the science fiction author. Only on the occasion his solo exhibition in 2010 at the ZKM Karlsruhe did he bring these three lives and careers together under the title "Wanderer Between the Worlds". In the early 1950s caving led him to experiment with light and technology. He kept his curiosity throughout his life; it was his drive to examine new technologies for their artistic potential. His pioneering spirit made him one of the first computer artists who was more than six decades ahead of his time. Franke discussed his visionary practice with Anika Meier in June 2022.
