Rosi Steinbach models her sculptural ceramics with impressive precision without fully succumbing to naturalism. The brightly colored paint depicts clothing, hairstyles or tattoos and gives the busts a contemporary air, thereby preventing confusion with similar works from ages past.
However, in one cycle, she describes an immense historic arc. It ranges from Agamemnon, the Mycenaean ruler, to Darth Vader, the equally mythical hero of a future century. The two are joined by masks of the Ticuna Indians, Guy Fawkes (precursor of the Occupy movement), and a horned being from the Alpine regions. The five ceramics are gilded, which gives them a dignified air. The uniform surface treatment of the busts makes them appear strikingly similar, even though they are, in term of their provenance and shapes, also extremely different.
Rosi Steinbach manages to create a uniquely cool but familiar atmosphere with media which could otherwise be considered sentimental trash.
