“This painting plays with the wave patterns as a space to be interacted with. The image of a traveling peddler is taken from a medieval illuminated manuscript. I like the idea of this man wandering through an impossible place, a setting that is hard to understand, then being attacked by a stray dog. I was thinking about ideas of instability, dread, and unexpected interruptions. On a formal level, this painting relies on the slight shifts of scale and perspective to turn a simple pattern into a treacherous place to go for a walk.” – Andrew Jilka
