Dirk's Mates (Pierre, Aal, Hund), 2003

Cosima von Bonin was part of documenta 12 in 2007 with various works exhibited at Fridericianum museum in Kassel.

Her three-part work made of velvet and felt, consisting of a roof batten, an eel, and a dog, seems as enigmatic as it is allegorical. Thus, behind the three objects - all of them "Dirk's Mates" - could be hidden an indecipherable proverb, or a narrative that revolves around these three "protagonists" and their absent fourth. And who is Dirk, anyway?

Cosima von Bonin often uses soft and textile materials and plays with stereotypical female symbols. There are numerous references and echoes - from Kippberger to Disney. Collaboration, appropriation and delegation play a central role for the artist
