SNAKES is based on the media installation “we are already history, and we don´t know it“. The brain is the major theme of this body of work, which includes various moving image pieces and an augmented reality application that examine the nature and function of our nervous system's central organ, as well as its digital counterparts.

In a usual fashion, the abstract is combined with the figurative to create immersive places that swing between the physical and virtual domains. On abstract patterns, idealized representations of items resembling organic structures, human cells, microbes, and artificial landscapes are layered.

The materiality of the computer-generated imagery flows effortlessly between the organic and the synthetic, pointing to a hybrid future, in which the analogue and the digital spheres have merged.

The shift between digital and analogue, real and virtual, abstract and representational collision is at the center of Dagmar Schürrer's artistic approach. In her digital works, she considers new concepts of space and time, the materiality of the digital, computerization of thinking processes, late capitalist paranoia, and projected utopian futures as they relate to our growing commitment to digital technology and the societal and individual implications of digitalization: new concepts of space and time, the materiality of the digital, computerization of thinking processes, late capitalist paranoia, and projected utopian futures. She creates complex video sound montages out of digitally generated objects and animations, text, drawings, and sound, evoking painting, collage, or poetry. They are displayed on screen, as installations, or in combination with emerging technology such as augmented reality, in ever-changing forms.

Dagmar Schürrer holds a degree in Fine Art from Central Saint Martin’s College in London, UK. Her work has been exhibited internationally, amongst others at the New Contemporaries at the ICA London, the Moscow Biennale for Young Art, Transmediale Vorspiel in Berlin and the Museum of Waste in Changsha, China. Her videos have been screened at numerous festivals: SUPERNOVA in Denver, the Seattle Film Festival, the Athens Digital Arts Festival, the Horn Experimental Film Festival in Israel, Tricky Women Festival in Vienna, or the Diagonale Film Festival in Graz. In recent years, she received the Goldrausch Scholarship from the Senate of Berlin and was shortlisted for the Berlin Art Prize and the Tenderpixel Award in London.
