For the past thirty years, Elvira Bach’s large-format portraits of women have fascinated viewers. With exuberant colors and hypnotic directness, her gripping painterly gesture reveals an irrepressible will to live that reflects all facets of human existence.

Bach is not only a chronicler of her life, reflecting on periods in her life ranging from the activities in artist meetings in the 1970s, through her stays in Africa and mother-and-child portraits, to the quieter images of the present. She has also remained an active explorer of the ambivalences of womanhood: self-confidence and the battle of the sexes; joy and sadness; and strength and irony.
