Past, present and future - squares, QR codes and an old German nursery rhyme generate Elias Wessel‘s work „Quick Response“, consisting of three slightly asymmetrical squares each in the form of a faulty QR code on a white background. When the codes are scanned, updated verse lines of an old nursery rhyme appear. After activating these pop-ups, the search engine scours the web for corresponding content. But who knows now what results the search engines will deliver in the future? The titles of the works “Schwarzes dataistisches Quadrat” [Black Dataistic Square], “Rotes Quadrat” [Red Square] and “Schwarzes Quadrat” [Black Square] as well as their image composition are direct references to Malevich‘s art-revolutionary works. While Malevich reduces form, color and structure to „zero“ in his squares, Wessel reduces image content to purely digital in his QR codes. He no longer presents „Quick Response“ in analog space but as a Non-fungible Token (NFT).
