Gerhard Altenbourg (1926-1989), an outstanding individualist among the artists from East Germany, worked almost exclusively on paper and combined a wide variety of chalks and inks with watercolor, pencil, or charcoal. His poetic works combine the sweeping line delineating the subject with very fine graphic elements. Accordingly, they captivate the viewer when seen at a great distance or up close. Thematically, his oeuvre can be divided into heads, scenes, and landscapes, although these categories sometimes also appear in combination. Both a painter and a poet, Altenbourg’s titles frequently played on words.
