For documenta 7, Jack Goldstein has written an aphoristic catalog essay that begins with the statement "Media is sensational," which can be seen as a leitmotif for his paintings in particular. At the same time, in his reflections he also underlines the substitute function of media technology for his own experience. He writes: "Technology does everything for us so that we no longer have to function in terms of experience. We function in terms of esthetics." The closed cosmos of a medially constituted world can therefore only be countered with the means of art. His slogan "Art should be a trailer for the future" is to be understood in this sense.
 

In 1976 artist Jack Goldstein began producing a series of audio works on vinyl records, the first of which was a suite of nine 45 rpm 7-inch records with sound effects. The 45s were paired with titles suggestive of their audio content and pressed in colored vinyl visually related to the sounds and their titles.

Jack Goldstein's extraordinary oeuvre is characterized by diversity and independence: It includes sculptures, performances, films, records, paintings, graphically designed aphorisms and texts. Goldstein initially worked on minimalist sculptures, but soon turned his attention to performance and film. All of Goldstein's films are shot on 16 mm material and are oriented in their design more to theatrical models than to the video aesthetic that was developing at the same time.
