James Welling exhibited at documenta 9 in Kassel, 1992.

The work "Island" is part of Welling's series of gelatin silver prints. Welling is known for his interest in the history of photography and its most common element, gelatin. In his process, gelatin - the binder layer for gelatin silver prints, but also a common food product - is boiled and mixed with dark ink. After the substance cools, it is arranged on seamless background paper and is photographed.

To describe James Welling simply as a photographer would fall short. Since the mid-1970s, the American has been concerned with the medium and the way of seeing. Thereby, his work is not subject to stylistic or technical boundaries.

This work is in excellent condition with no discernible condition issues. Detailed condition report available upon request.
