"In this group of works, I printed portraits of crying people. The identity of the people on the original photographs remains anonymous. Once the photographs were printed on a large canvas, I painted them over with several layers of paint. At the last stage, each painting was given a name (like “Jenny Doesn’t Know What She Really Looks Like”). Each painting is attached to the name of a specific character, like Jenny, Lucas, Sheryl etc. In these works, I was thinking about the way we see and relate to each other. Once the physical representation was already on the canvas, next, it was up to me to turn it into a landscape of colours and marks. What if the way we see ourselves and each other is not a static representational picture, but rather an accumulation of unfinished impressions and memories that is neither completely recognisable nor fully abstract? Something that’s in a constant state of becoming." – Daniel Spivakov
