Jörg Immendorff participated at documenta 5 and 7.

The painting shows a figure with red skin color holding a steering wheel. The figure resembling a human looks at the viewer with open eyes and it is unclear whether this hybrid creature is smiling or irritated. The painting reflects elements of satire typical of Immendorf's style as well as the observation and criticism of the life in post-war Germany.

The neo-expressionist Jörg Immendorff was an important German painter, sculptor and action artist of the 20th century. He was a contemporary of Sigmar Polke, Anselm Kiefer and other important artists of his time and a student of Joseph Beuys. Immendorff understood art as a medium by which he reflected on social and political problems. His works often address psychological and political turmoil of post-war Germany and his compositions often combine references to art history, German history, and mythology.
