The new series SCREENS tries to take up the art-historical window motif. The metaphor of the painted image as an open window to the world is already very old and today it is the surfaces of the screens and monitors through which the world is perceived. Johannes Wohnseifer tries to reproduce this motif and translate it back into the medium of painting.
The new paintings are technically a hybrid of analog painting and digital tools. Both material levels are attempted to combine, always knowing that even this is already a cliché. Since the image motif is created by removing the uppermost layers of paint, there is an analogy to the subtractive procedure in the production of traditional sculptures.
In the latest paintings, the grid and lattice structures, translucency and reflections are often used to reconstruct the conditions of perception of screens.
The images are always presented with an aluminum frame, anodized or painted, which is is part of the work. This industrial-looking objectness of the images is an important element. The works are also based on their models in the choice of image formats.
