Marcel Duchamp was a participant at documenta 3 in the year 1964. After his death, his works were exhibited at documenta 5 (1972) and again at documenta 6 (1977).

One of the most important and momentous, but at the same time also one of the most enigmatic pieces of modernist art is the famous Box in a Valise by Marcel Duchamp, which he put together between 1935 and 1941. It contains the sum of his artistic work. Perhaps in premonition of the coming war, and over years without a fixed address, he reproduced his work in a format that enabled him to easily transport his 'complete works' at any time.

With persistent precision as well as welcome randomness, with stubborn anarchy and humorous lightness, Marcel Duchamp created works that, through their precision and openness, as it were, only find their completion through us viewers. Duchamp, whose oeuvre consists out of paintings, sculptures and text, is regarded one of the most important artists of the 20th century, responsible for significant developments in painting and sculpture. Duchamp had a seminal impact on conceptual art.
