“It is both a blessing and a curse to feel everything so very deeply.” This citation from the poet David Jones, born in 1919, supplies Olivia Steele with her juxtaposition of BLESSING and CURSE in the title of her work.
The conceptual nature of this sculpture addresses the full spectrum of human emotion and the experience of perceiving the duality between them both. Olivia Steele adopts the poet’s emotional melodrama and, with a shot of irony, carries it to extremes: like justice, the antique scale weighs the concept of a blessing or a curse of a profound emotional state. But in contrast to what the title implies, blessings and curses ultimately do not weigh the same. Specific attention has been given to the color, direction, and placement of the words, and leaves it up to the viewer to interpret it’s personal meaning as it relates to the ability to feel profound emotions.
