Humor is omnipresent in my paintings, making the narrative as important as the composition and the color itself. I often start my paintings dividing up the space on the canvas without knowing how to fill it. And that is exactly how the work "Sharing a bigger cigarette" (2022) began.... two simple ellipses with a vertical border formed the basis for the image that evolved during the process of painting. – André Wendland
Since childhood, I have been a big fan of Cartoons. The colours, the clear shapes, but of course also the humour and how entertaining they are were the main reasons. In 2020 I started to incorporate this theme into my work and realised quickly what a great source of inspiration it is. I started to develop new techniques in my work to approach this, like painting directly on old TVs or discarded mobile phones and soon motifs like the Simpsons and Mickey Mouse started to show up in my work.
I also explored animation for my work: I created little scenes with clay figures and composition became the main focus of my paintings too. All displays are limited by a frame and so is a canvas. With this in mind, my compositions started to fill the canvas more and more and the formats got bigger.
I do not want to see my work only in my studio or in exhibitions on white walls, I prefer a context that’s a better fit for the image. Last year, I worked on a series of drivers and it only made sense to show the works on the street. After their drive through the city they have a story to tell, they experienced something and I like this thought. – André Wendland
