In Aline Alagem’s works, feminine sensuality and desire are both a metaphor and realization of self-manifestation. Working with oil on different formats that vary from paper and linen to wood, Alagem plays with the traditional appearance of painting, shifting from intimate formats to large-scale installation objects. In her dense, yet dreamy paintings, the compositions and collage-like altered scenes suggest the presence of hidden layers that flow beneath the surface. The virtuosic scenes are highly realist yet maintain a surrealist "logic", intergrading repeating symbols and clues like motives.
Moments of secret longings and pleasures appear amidst frosty arctic landscapes; the sublime and the "real" exist in the same realm. They ask about the possibility and impossibility of reaching the edge of desire- becoming it or being lost in it.
In depicting moments of precious, complex intimacy between women or a story of desire from their perspective, Alagem challenges the historical position of women as passive subjects, bringing them down from their male made pedestal to an arena where they are no longer only the vessels for other’s desires, but are the feeling, longing heroines creating their own story, one that needs not solving for it to be distinct and captivating.
