Esra Gülmen

Esra Gülmen lives and works in Berlin. She has studied interior design and has a career as an art director in international companies. As an artist, Gülmen seeks to expand the definition of drawing. She redefines the medium by recalling caligrams of the beginning of the 20th century and responding to them with her own century's reality and discourses about current trends, popular culture and activism.

Gülmen’s practice ranges from daily objects to paper works and wearable items, merging various aspects of daily life. She relates image to word or word to image, bringing to life a visual identity which talks about value, materialism and consumerism.

The artist invites to an experimental research in the psychology of reading and image perception by using words that complete her images or vice versa, demanding the viewer’s own thinking or drawing.
