Arvida Byström has created and uploaded self-portraits online since she was 12 years old. This is however the first all digital self portrait to be sold by the artist.
Through the depiction of her body she has for over a decade explored how the body and the self relates to the online world. Photos censored from instagram in the book Pics or it Didn’t Happen co-edited with Molly Soda, the show Cherry Picking juxtapositioning still lives and selfies as historically feminized mediums and her recent exploration into cottage core and goblin online aesthetics are just a few examples of this.
This new work is toying with the history of naming self-portraits after things portrayed with the artist, only this time the thing portrayed isn’t necessarily visible.
