Going Home
In collaboration with Fellowship on Daily.xyz.
The story begins amidst chaos, showing orangutans and aunties fleeing a burning rainforest. An orangutan narrates, "It was difficult at first... all that burning... the smoke... I think about them, you know? My family... friends... my home. Then aunties took us to these doors... I was scared at first..." Rescued by an auntie, the orangutans are led through doorways in trees into another world, which might be a parallel universe or an interpretation of the afterlife.
GOING HOME by Niceaunties aims to raise awareness about deforestation and its impact on wildlife. Palm oil production, primarily in Southeast Asia, threatens species like orangutans by destroying their habitats, causing deforestation, biodiversity loss, and displacing local communities. The industry also contributes to air pollution and carbon emissions. While initiatives such as the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil strive to promote eco-friendly practices, their effectiveness is debatable. The significant impact on wildlife and local populations underscores the urgent need for more robust conservation efforts.
