48-HOUR EDITION DROP: ANNA PASCHER | VASE IV
8-10 November
2023
6-6 PM CET

Anna Pascher is a Düsseldorf-based contemporary artist and mother of two sons who studied design and led a successful fashion company in Berlin for 10 years before she fully devoted her focus to art. Pascher started by skillfully capturing the essence of everyday objects, transforming them into compelling visual narratives. Recently, her artistic repertoire has primarily revolved around aspects of intuition and breaking away from the conventional notions of representational objects. Anna is inspired by concepts of an intuitive artistic approach.

ABOUT THE WORK
VASE IV is part of Anna Pascher’s new series AN ABSTRACT FEAST BREAKING THE MOLD. It is about intuition and breaking free from conventional ideas and expectations. This is particularly evident in the color and surface intersections, as well as the intuitive lines and surrealist approaches. The work VASE IV reflects these approaches in various ways. The vase may appear robust, but as with conventions, it is not impregnable. When one breaks free from them, it opens a new space for the hidden and the inner—especially one's own intuition—and new perspectives can emerge. And this is how I wish the work was viewed—open-minded and intuitively, so that everyone can interpret it individually. And perhaps also to make one's own intuition tangible.

ANNA PASCHER: AN ABSTRACT FEAST BREAKING THE MOLD

Imge Turan Täschner: When did you first get in touch with art?

Anna Pascher: Art and I became fast friends from my earliest memories. It's like we were introduced at birth, and we've been inseparable ever since. As Jonathan Meese aptly said, we're born as artists, and as adults, we just rediscover and relearn that innate connection with our creative selves.

ITT: When did you know you wanted to be an artist?

AP: The artist in me has been brewing since childhood, but it was during my journey through the world of fashion that I truly embraced this calling. I made the decision a few years ago to leave the fashion industry behind and wholeheartedly pursue my passion for art.

ITT: What is the story behind the development of your artistic style and technique?

AP: My artistic style and technique have evolved over the years through a process of experimentation and exploration. I've always had a fondness for drawing, even during my time in the fashion industry, and that love for sketching laid the foundation for my artistic journey. I draw inspiration from a variety of sources, and it's an ongoing process of self-discovery and artistic growth.

ITT: What inspired your move from the fashion industry to the world of contemporary art? How have your previous experiences influenced your current artistic practice?

AP: My transition from the fashion industry to contemporary art was inspired by a deep longing for artistic expression and the desire to explore the world of self-expression more freely. My previous experiences in fashion instilled in me a keen sense of aesthetics, an aptitude for conceptual work, and an understanding of visual communication, all of which play a significant role in shaping my current artistic practice. The shift was a natural evolution, guided by my passion for art and the insights I gained from the fashion industry.

ITT: Your artwork often features two- and three-dimensional table settings presented in a simplified manner. How do you approach the process of finding harmony and balance within these compositions, especially in terms of color, form, and space?

AP: When it comes to discovering harmony and balance in these compositions, I heavily rely on my intuition. Colors, shapes, and spaces interact in a way that flows from within me, aligning with my inner vision. It's a sensitive process in which simplicity plays a key role in creating a complex and well-balanced visual experience. The more spontaneous and intuitive the process, the more it tends to resonate with the final outcome.

ITT: You mentioned that you drew inspiration from the act of setting a table. How does this ritualistic process influence the themes and emotions that you aim to convey in your artwork?

AP: The act of setting a table is a deeply ingrained cultural tradition that evokes feelings of warmth, connection, and anticipation. It's within this ritualistic process that I discover the essence of community and the beauty of everyday life. These themes have been at the core of my recent works, alongside abstract still-life pieces. However, this theme serves as a tool to fulfil my central intent: emphasizing intuition and breaking free from rigid notions of how things should look or be depicted accurately.

Particularly in my latest pieces, I experiment with "breaking conformity" through the use of lines and color overlaps, inviting the viewer to interpret what they see intuitively and individually, regardless of a fixed table setting.

ITT: In your paintings, the absence of people is evident. What do you hope to evoke in viewers?

AP: The absence of people in my paintings is intentional. It allows space for the viewer's imagination to flourish. I aim to create a sense of contemplation, inviting viewers to project their own emotions and stories onto the scenes. It's an invitation to become part of the artwork, to find one's own narrative, and to experience a personal connection with the piece.

ITT: You use various materials and surfaces, including acrylic and oil paints on paper and canvas. How do these material choices allow you to experiment with textures and techniques in your artistic expression?

AP: The choice of materials and surfaces is an integral part of my artistic process. I primarily work with acrylic paints because they offer a smoother and more closed texture compared to oil pastels. The advantage of acrylic paints lies in their quick drying time, allowing me to work more spontaneously and intuitively and experiment with different kinds of layering. In addition to traditional paints, I also incorporate acrylic markers into my work to add fine and spontaneous elements. This "childlike and naive" approach to drawing with markers brings a sense of naivety and playfulness to my art, enriching the overall artistic expression.

ITT: You described your work as spontaneous and intuitive. How does your intuition guide your creative process?

AP: My intuition is a compass that guides every brushstroke and artistic decision. It's like a silent conversation with my inner self, although this dialogue is not always effortless. It involves my journey of letting go and living in the moment. I trust my instincts and allow colors, shapes, and structures to flow naturally without excessive analysis. This intuitive process leads to unexpected and unique outcomes and forms the core of my artistic journey. It's a dance between conscious and subconscious expression, where each brushstroke is a step in creating a visual story and, at the same time, a process of breaking free from conformity and exploring infinite possibilities.

ITT: How do you perceive the role of social media platforms like Instagram in contributing to the promotion and development of your artistic endeavors?

AP: Social media platforms like Instagram have been instrumental in promoting and developing my artistic endeavors. They provide a global stage for artists to share their work, connect with a diverse audience, and receive instant feedback. Instagram, in particular, allows me to showcase my art, engage with art enthusiasts, and establish meaningful connections with fellow artists and galleries. It has opened up new opportunities, collaborations, and exposure that were previously unimaginable. Social media is, without a doubt, a powerful tool for artists in today's digital age.

ITT: What are your ambitions and goals for your artistic career in the future?

AP: My ambitions for my artistic career in the future are to continue evolving as an artist, exploring new dimensions of creativity, and pushing the boundaries of my own work. I aspire to collaborate with fellow artists and immerse myself in different artistic communities to gain fresh perspectives. Additionally, I hope to exhibit my art on a global scale, reaching a broader audience and sharing my passion for art with people from diverse backgrounds. Ultimately, my goal is to create art that resonates with others, evokes emotions, and fosters a deeper connection between the viewer and the artwork. I aim to convey to the viewer the feeling that anything is possible, that there are no boundaries, and that one can see freely, think freely, and always listen to their intuition. Art has the power to transcend boundaries and touch the soul, and I plan to harness this power in my journey as an artist.
